On Monday, the Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers (MHACY) announced that they will be opening up the waitlist for Housing Choice Vouchers (also known as Section 8 Affordable Housing) for the first time in over a decade. MHACY aims to add up to 3,000 qualified applicants to the list, who will be awarded vouchers based on availability and preference. These vouchers are provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano stated that providing affordable housing is crucial for a city’s well-being and that MHACY is using a three-pronged approach of adding new market-rate housing, renovating existing MHACY housing, and making more affordable housing available through vouchers in partnership with building owners to ensure a diverse range of housing options for working families.

The income limits to qualify, based on the number of people in a family are:

  • One person: $48,550
  • Two people: $55,450
  • Three people: $62,400
  • Four people: $69,300
  • Five people: $74,850
  • Six people: $80,400
  • Seven people: $85,950
  • Eight people: $91,500

Applications for the Housing Choice Voucher waitlist will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. on July 13, with the lottery scheduled for August 2 and 3. The applications are accessible in English, Spanish, and Korean, and can be submitted in person to the MHACY Central Office at 1511 Central Park Ave, or by mail to The Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers, PO Box 35, Yonkers, NY 10710.
